Cream, two sugars and some spam please…

This morning as with every morning, I walk right past our neighbors at Starbucks (they are right next to the set at MoM).
Ah…the smell of coffee might as well be the wafting aroma of spiked brownies to an addict. I can’t say “no” and in I went. I found out that my regular “barista” has moved on to another job. In conversation with my new “barista” Todd (who is really an old friend I used to do theatre’ with) he tells me that he now works for a company named “Spam”. The young gentleman in a the tie and crisply ironed shirt next to me began to refer to the canned meat product, Spam… not the computer reference that I’m sure Todd meant. We all chuckled, and I confessed that, as a child I loved a spam sandwich… IF, it was fried up nice and crispy. My sandwich recipe was interrupted when someone said, “yeh, with some ‘Dukes’ on it”. (This was a clear “southern” reference to our regions favorite mayonnaise.) I chimed in, “and some sweet pickle relish” and the sandwich recipe grew with each customer, as they picked their heads up out of their ‘sentence long coffee drinks’. We all laughed. The guy in the tie said “I’m glad someone will finally admit to liking spam”… and I walked out and next door to the set of the show.
No longer than I had walked in a lady surprised me with a tap on the shoulder and a, “Good morning, Kimberly, I’m here with you SPAM Gift Basket!” What?! Had I heard her right? It was a lady from the Peace Center standing in front of me holding an Easter basket full of all kinds of goodies… but most apparent was the CAN OF SPAM, sitting right on the top. Now, this crazy coincidence had me thinking that the “gods of spam” were somehow looking down on me and thanking me for standing up for their cans of greasy, over-processed, molded meat product.
Fate…probably not, she was there to remind us of the upcoming Peace Center attraction, “Spam-a-lot”.
Funny… it was to me. You should have seen the look on the faces of all the folks in the coffee shop when I marched back over and proudly showed off my gift basket of SPAM!
Goodbye for now, see you guys around town,
Kimberly
