I spent some time in Clemson, South Carolina yesterday… what a great place!
They are working on a really fun event up there that I will share with you at a later date.
One of the organizers, graciously brought me some organic coffee that he, himself roasted at home.
Well… I thought, there are those privileged few that have wine cellers in their humble abodes… this gentleman has a gourmet coffee roaster, I was impressed!
Not nearly as impressed as when I found out he was just a normal ‘joe’ like me and was merely a master improviser when it came to roasting the coffee.
He informed me he had used an air popper… that’s right, a popcorn popper had roasted the coffee. Honestly, he he also added, there were others in this underground movement
And so I did what all people ‘now days’ do… “I you tubed’ it”… here’s what I found, I hope you enjoy it. By the way, the green coffee beans came from West End Coffee in Greenville, and it was WONDERFUL!

That was interesting.
thanks!
It was to me as well; I had no idea people were doing this!
I wonder what the cost difference is on a “roaster” and popcorn popper??? (Haha)

My method is very similar. The big difference is that mine is a Presto Poplite, which has a screen at the bottom of the well – not the circular vent most others prefer. And yes, the beans are blown everywhere. So what I’ve done is to cut a 12” length of cardboard mailing tube to use as a chaff stack, placed through the hole in the top of the cover and set on-edge over the well. This allows the beans to “fluff around” in the hot air while the chaff blows out the top of the stack. I do this on my back patio, by the way – it makes a mess! I also added an in-line cord switch, since the popper does not have a power switch of its own (strange, I thought). About 1/8 cup of beans at a time keeps them from being weighed down and burnt. And yes, they’re in there for about 3 minutes or so – it does not take long.
