One of my heroes…

What a FUN day! We had the one and only, Nancy Welch on our show; now, if you’re new to the area, let me explain… Nancy did a day time talk show on channel 7 for about 22 years, from 1966 into the 80’s. (I know, she looks too young for that many years, eh?) Ironically, back then she was right after a “Dr Phil” (as Jack and I are now) too… only it was aired right after Phil Donohue.
She was our areas “Martha Stewart or Paula Dean” back when those names meant nothing. Women would gather around their televisions to learn a new recipe or craft or hear about an up coming event in the community. To me, we had TV Royalty on today… a lady, who as I recall: loved doing “lady-like” things, but that was strong, smart and even funny. (hey, my mom came to the show today and was almost moved to tears!)
She shared a story with me before the show started and I thought I’d share it with you:
Nancy recalled that she was sent to watch the Phil Donohue Show and was to interview him afterwards, since his show was on before hers each day. (By the way, Dr. Phil, I can be on a plane in rather short notice, hahaha) She was greeted by Phil with a, “Hey aren’t you that lady from the South who has the cooking and sewing show?” She said yes, and he informed her that he had to take a call from the Pope… yes, THE Pope. But Phil had a problem; he had a tear in his pant leg and asked Nancy if she could sew it up??? Nancy agreed and soon there after… she was stooped down, needle and thread in hand, mending Phil Donohue’s pants as he chatted with Pope John Paul! Yes, she got her interview afterwards. Great story and Nancy, THANK YOU for coming on Your Carolina… I hope you’ll be back many times to come.
See you on the show,
Kimberly

Oh, the recipes that she did on our show today, are posted on our website. By the way, tried them and they are truly wonderful. My personal favorite was the “Creme Brulee French Toast”, Mmmmmm!
