Six Meals a Day… six!

By Kimberly Kelly
Apr. 12, 2009 at 10:05 PM

So my dad was right all those years, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” according to my newly acquired Trainer, Aaron… but don’t forget the other five meals.
(screeching sound effect can be placed here).
Yes, six meals a day. I’m not completely in the dark, I have heard of this; but to live it.

(Enter fast talking voice-over guy… “Please note that Kimberly is NOT a nutritionist, nor does she play one on tv”)
The theories behind these six meals are, as I understand:
1) Your metabolism runs on these and so your metabolism is now running ALL DAY… burning calories!
2) These are not huge meals, and so these smaller portions will allow your stomach to shrink
3) You find your self with more energy and no hunger pains pulling through the krispy kreme drive-thru for a ‘hot one’…. (ok, it is necessary to note at this point that life should never be without a hot krispy kreme, occationally)Now, how to pull this off… How was this to happen, when I didn’t have time for all of the mere and measly ‘3 meals’ just two weeks ago? Breakfast, was something I grabbed out the door, “IF” I have time. Lunch… was that thing I missed because I was too caught up in work. Supper, we’ll that was my time to cook and eat. So here comes another bit of advice from ‘Aaron the Trainer’: “Kimberly… work your life around your meals, not your meals around your life”.

So I have, I get up early, before anyone in the family; some days working out a bit first, but always fixing breakfast… me.
Many of you know that I REALLY believe in, “You are what you eat and that our country is so mislead about food. YES, I’m a “food conspiracist”….ha, my own word and title! I don’t drink sodas, eat processed foods and sugars, artificial this and that… just good fresh foods as simple and whole as possible. What in the world can I learn about food from him, right?

Six meals… that’s what.

I want to hear from you guys… have you tried this? Tell me your stories.

Kimberly,

I was so excited to see your blog. My husband has struggled with being overweight for years, especially after moving to SC a little over 2 years ago. He works with a man who does weight lifting and has accomplished setting the world record in his weight and age class. But anyway, he has been coaching my husband on weight loss and what he calls “an eating plan”. My husband started eating 6 small meals a day last Sept. and to date he has lost 33 lbs. In order to get the right amount of calories for the day he took his goal weight, which is 175 lbs, multiplied that number by 10 (which is 1750) that would be his calorie intake for the day. Divide that number by 6 (which is how many meals you consume in a day) that number for him is 291 which is how many calories each meal should be. He says he never gets hungry. This has really been life changing. I cook completely different now and if we go out to eat he will usually get salad. I am so excited because this has been something that really has worked for him. He is also a diabetic and has had poor blood sugar control in the past. They test it with an A1C test that checks your average blood sugar over a 3 month period. The doctors want your A1C to be under 7. Last Oct. his was 8.4. In Jan. it was 6.9. That was very exciting news and it’s all because of his eating 6 small meals a day. He has more energy and is losing the weight slowly. This is a great way to lose weight since you will be more likely to keep it off. I wanted to tell you this becuase I was very excited to read your blog. I had never heard of this before. I am the opposite of most people. My problem has been being underweight most of my life. So having to cook in a way that promotes weight loss is very different for me. I just wanted to let you know how well this 6 small meals a day is working for my husband. Thanks for the blog. I really enjoyed it.

six meals in this economy who has the money or time.  i think the best way to handle this is a six pack of diet coke and a bag of peanuts.  buy a bicycle and park the car.  seriously i have heard six meals a day all my life from doctors and weight lifters or trainers.  when i was in my teen years that was how i kept from fainting because i could not get enough to eat. we have become a people of a quick fix that picks you up and an hour later you fall like a rock.  fruits in my opinion is the best snack for small meal core.

I eat 5-6 small meals a day and it really does work though some days it is difficult when I am busy. Kimberly, I am right there with you about being a food conspiracist and I’m constantly surprised at how many people do not understand the correlation between what you put in your body and what your health is. Recently I saw someone take a cancer patient a bacon cheeseburger…I’m not kidding!  I know genetics plays a role too but food plays a big role in your health. And sodas and sweet tea have way too much sugar.  You look great but I understand that all of us can use some tips along the way.  I love your show!

Oh it’s so good to heat your thought on this…
I am now going on week 4 and I will never turn back.

Sam, I don’t fix 6 “meals” like “meat and three”... some of the in-between meals are things likem almond butter on a banana or a can of tuna… just keeping fuel in the tank, lol. I agree with you on the fruit thing… wonderful, packaged by God himself :)

Nancy, it was so encouraging to read about the success you guys have had. Yeah… I knew I felt better.

Ginni… my fellow “food conspiracist”...lol. Rock on!

Thanks for sharing guys,

I was rised on 3 meals a day. My dad wanted biscuits or cornbread at all meals. So we had a fried meat, cream potatoes or FF and a veggie with either homemade biscuits or cornbread 7 days a week. What I am getting at is I don’t know how to cook a good healthy meal. My husband and I have talked about losing weight but when I look for reciepes for healthy cooking it seems to be food I have never heard. Does anyone have any suggestions.

OK Miss Kimberly are we still doing the 6 small meal deal???
I am doing strictly fruit now and peanut butter on a teaspoon.
I can’t believe how much pick up i get from the peanut butter.
I thought I would just check and see how you are doing with this routine.

Sam… I am!

(hehe, sounded like a Dr Suess book, eh?)

I don’t think I’ll go back, getting the much needed energy I didn’t have before. Of course they are not all FULL meals
the inbetween ones are quite small, like a handfull of almonds, an apple, etc… just keeping some sort of healthy food in me as fuel to go through the day.
I do a lot of almond butter, works great doesn’t it.

I was overweight as a child and had to endure the degrading comments of fellow students from 1st grade through high school. When I was 11 years old I was put on a diet of 1000 calories per day. For the next 30 years I battled the bulge. I went through the diet pill phase along with other dangerous practices to lose weight. I would get up in the morning and wait as long as I could before I would take my first bite for the day. About 15 yrs ago my weight peaked at 275lbs and a friend of mine (physical trainer) told me that eating breakfast would help me to lose weight. I responded with, “You don’t understand, once I take that first bite I will eat from that point on!” He informed me that all of those hours that I went without eating, I was burning little or no calories because I had no fuel (food)to burn. I reluctantly started eating a light breakfast and in 6wks. lost 30lbs. I learned my lesson. I lost a total of 150lbs. and have kept it off ever since

I’ve done this and decided to make it a lifestyle change.I went to Healthy Weigh and they taught me how to do this. The most interesting thing about it was that I was able to lose 15 lbs.during Thanksgiving and Christmas while doing this and did not have to give up my favorite dishes.I lost a total of 96 lbs.And have kept it off.And I’ve had two babies since then.

Kimberly I can’t beleive i will get to see you on a new show at the dinner hour.  “OH MAN THIS IS GREAT” I am excited.  This is usually the time of day i am winding down. This will be great to see YOU and get some inside INFO on what is going on.  What type of guest are you having??  Will it be local stuff????

I will be watching.  I was watching Who Loves Raymond but some of there material was on the edge.

mary-alice hulch | June 26, 2009 at 6:52 am

Loved reading all the above info.  I’m trying to eat every
3 - 4 hrs. for weight loss.  eating a small amt. of fat with protein and carbs at each meal.  Having a hard time
trying to decide just what to eat.  think my meals should
be about 200 cal. each….Have only been doing this for a
few weeks and up to now I’ve gained about 2 lbs.
              so discouraged     —
have any suggestions?
