To cut or not to cut, and then HOW to cut…

…THAT is the question!  We are doing working with locks of love on getting people to cut their hair and donate it, which in turn will be used to make wigs for children undergoing cancer treatments and such. A WONDERFUL organization! Edwin McCain was on the show yesterday and said that he himself has donated hair… He did have plenty at one time to do that with, remember?

Yesterday, Jack was at Ivy’s Color Salon in downtown Greenville (where I get my hair done) as people came by and donated generously. One girl gave 18 inches of hair and she still had it fully hitting her shoulders when she left!
Now here are the numbers to remember you need 10 inches to make a wig… they will take 6, but it is sold and the money goes back into the cause. (So I guess monetary donations are just as accepted?). We had them measure my hair, which I thought… surely is long enough, right? Well, I don’t have 10 inches to give (short of my new hair style being a “flat top”) Here’s where I begin to sound vein (I do hate myself for this) but here it goes anyway:
We will be taking TV station pictures in a few weeks… what if short hair just simply looks horrible on me? I’ll have to look at them for over a year! OK, that's where I feel completely selfish… so I’m letting you answer the question.
Should I support this effort in another way and keep my hair?
Should I go ahead with the ‘flat top’?
Should I give what I can now even if it doesn’t meet the ‘10in’ requirement?
Should I continue to let it grow and give at a later date?

And lastly… if any of you are looking to donate and want to do it on live television, we’d love to have you on the show.

Kimberly.

DON’T DO IT… I would hate see you cut your hair off and then it still not be enough for the locks of love to make a wig from.

You should grow it out for another 6 months or so and then cut it off. Leaving you with some hair for yourself when they are done. LOL

I do not think you should cut your hair. It is not that long to begin with.

I think you should help in other ways. We dont want you to look like the picture above.

By the way, is that Boy George?

Hi Kimberly,  I think it is a wonderful thing to do!  I donated my hair this year and it was down to my waist!  This is the first time my hair has been at my shoulders in over 25 years.  It is very different, especially when you wash it, but it will grow back!  Then you can do it again!  :-)

Yes, it is amazing how we as women become so very emotionally attacted to our hair… I tried to explain it to my husband last night… I guess it’s a ‘girl’ thing?
It will grow though, and who am I to question keeping it, when there are those who have no choice.
I said UPFRONT, however, I have no intention to keep it short… I will grow it back out! Or I guess if it looks too bad, I’ll get some of those “jessica simpson extensions’” that they sell on QVC…Hahaha

In my opinion Kimberly, you shouldn’t cut your long, gorgeous locks as I prefer women with long, dark hair;it’s very sexy.I appreciate you wanting to help a good cause and in the end it’s your decision either way.Your a sweet person for wanting to help others.Happy Birthday,by the way.

Way to go, Kimberly!  My daughter, Abigail, who will be 14 August 15, has donated to Locks of Love four times for a total of 59 inches!!!  Somewhere out there is a child with beautiful blonde hair because of this.  It was a wonderful gesture to create awareness.  And, if you worry about having short hair, consider those who have no hair due to illness.  As a cancer survivor myself, I appreciate you being willing to make a sacrifice for this cause.  God Bless You!

David Crosby sang a song called, “Almost cut my hair”...
there was meaning in that, in it’s day and time; though different than what I did today.

There was also meaning today (at least for me) as well. Thank you Angie…
I’ll have to be honest, I felt like some one punched me in the gut when I cut my hair today. There had been comments made to me as though I would be less valued without “long locks”. I saw the looks on the faces of those who had come by the show to watch… they said so much, and it wasn’t “I’m happy for ya’”.
The truth be told, I like my hair long better and I was, dearly attached to it.

I have however, after much shock, learned that hair is a luxury for many out there and perhaps I will be more willing to ‘give’ because of this experience.
Silly… I guess that we as women hold our hair as such a prized part of us. Silly the way, we let looks and comments affect us.

I’ll go for now… Angie, thank you for the kind words. (You’ll have to bring Abigal to the show one day)
I’m enjoying the “shorter do” ...
Just know, one day I WILL be the old lady with the long gray hair!

kimberly,

i think you made the rational decision.  good for you!
perfect hair is more important if you don’t have a pretty face.  i think you’re safe there.  :)

That’s nice Sean…
I’ve actually enjoyed the “shorter do”
