Dr. Rhoades Answers a Question about strange bruises found on a child
Tuesday, July 27, 2010
by: Dr. Roger Rhoades

QUESTION:
My granddaughter of 3 years old generally is on the move @ about 300 miles per hour. Naturally along with this comes a lot of bumps, bruises, cuts, and scrapes. Recently my daughter made a comment that the bruises on her upper arm looked as if it was a hand print. My grandson of 6 spoke up and said Nona did it. This is my daughters mother, (my ex). My daughter didn’t make any more comments about it and I guess it kinda caught me by surprise. Since then I have become upset with myself for not inquiring more about it. This is not the type of comment my grandson would make unless it were true. I would think she would have had to grab her pretty hard to leave bruises? Now I know my granddaughter can get on your last nerve at times, but I feel this type of discipline is a bit extreme. I doubt my daughter would say anything to her mother, so I’m wondering if I should say something to my son in law about it?

ANSWER:
Ask you daughter, not your son-in-law. If her answer seems good, then move on and watch. If her answer is strange, then you need to decide if you need DSS to investigate this issue.
