A Day in the life of an Intern

Wow, folks this week has been CRAZY!!  I’m the programming intern for WSPA and am working directly with Jack and Kimberly…and with Kimberly’s new show, Scene on Seven!  We have lots of cool jargon that we use around the station and we call Kimberly’s new show, SO 7! Haha I love it.

Well, Elvis had Charlie Hodge as his “General Flunky” and Jack and Kimberly have me!  And boy do they keep me busy.  I’ve gone through all the general “intern” stereotypes such as fetching coffee and everyone jokes about that w/ me.  (Although I don’t mind going to get Kimberly’s hot tea at Starbucks b/c its right beside Michelin on Main…the coffee shop Jack prefers, (b/c of something political I’m sure! Haha) is wayyyyy across the street…Come on, Jack!  If Paris Hilton and Mary Kate Olsen can sip on Starbucks, so can you!

Oh wow, you wouldn’t believe the stuff I’ve had to do if I told ya! BUT here goes!  Yesterday, I went to get a taser from Allen’s Arms down on Poinsett Hwy. and took a mini training session before I left…the owner said, “Now, ya’ll are gonna shoot this thing ain’t ya?” I said, “No! Kimberly just wants to show the sparks and the buzzing sound!”  I guess he thought we were gonna go bear hunting w/ that taser or something…who knows?!?!  That was an adventure…and Kimberly told me this morning that it just MADE the show…so, that’s great!  I think it added a lot, also.  She compliments my work and that makes me feel so good.

My producer, Megan Heidlberg, has been showing me the ropes here at the station in Spartanburg and I’m having a good time getting to know every body.  She wears these 2-4 inch heels on a daily basis and has to walk up stairs and I just mentioned to her this morning, “Gosh, Megan, it’s a wonder you don’t fall with those heels!!” Haha How does she do that?!?!  Guys like me will never understand….

Tuesday I met with Tom Crabtree, Amy Wood and Christy Henderson (who is one rockin’ weather lady, let me tell ya!)  These folks are sooo cool…Since I’m in television and studying multimedia in college, I know all about appearance required on camera, etc…I used to anchor a morning tv program for my high school and ive even anchored in college…but Tom Crabtree uses a LOT of makeup! Haha MORE than Amy! Haha I found that so funny.  They were just so nice to me.  I had a great convo w/ reporter Dianne Derby on Tuesday…what an interesting person…and she thought that I was the interesting one!  I bet we talked thirty plus minutes about my autograph collection and famous people that I’ve met and interviewed…she said at one point, “I should be finishing my work but you’ve got me captivated!” haha She was a sweet person.  Then I sat in the control booth to watch the news with the 5 o’clock news producer, Kathryn, who welcomed me so graciously.  I really do feel appreciated and warmly received here…and everyone wants to be accepted.

Last week was a doosy, let me tell ya!  Kimberly sent me off on one of my famous Quests for Props and she told me she wanted balloons…five of um to be exact…for SO 7 because she was gonna mention the UP premiere that we hosted a couple of weeks ago…so I’m like in downtown Greenville at MOM (Michelin on Main) and I’m thinking, “Where in the name of Mother Dixie can a poor intern like me get his mitts on some balloons?”  Well, I went to Publix…nice place; VERY HIGH CEILINGS…and prices to match!!!  The little balloon man, can’t remember his name, bless his soul, was so nice…told me his life story while blowing up these latex balloons…and I thought, OK – this guy likes talking to me and has somehow felt compelled to throw out details to a stranger that I wouldn’t tell my best friend, so he’ll give me a good deal on these balloons.  WRONG.  Wow. Kimberly had given me $5 to buy these suckers…. He rings them up and its like $6.45…no fooling!  They were over a dollar a piece!!  Gosh, were they filled with helium or Chanel Number 5!?!? Haha   I paid up and got back to MOM and Kimberly was just as shocked as I was…oh well, had to share that!  I guess I’ll go to a dollar store to get balloons next time.  But there aren’t many around here.

Well, I went to see The Veronica’s last night in concert down at the Handlebar in Greenville…. And OMG!  They were SOOO cool!  I must admit I was star struck.  These chicks have it going on.  And to make it even better, the front group for them was “Pretty Wreckless” with lead singer Taylor Momsen of “Gossip Girls”! I know…wow!!  I was blown away… it was standing room only and I arrived when the doors opened at 7…the show didn’t start till like 8:15…and im soo glad that I did because it was cool.  Kimberly plugged the show on SO 7 like a day or so before…but I had to wake up this morning after arriving at home at like 2 a.m. and come to work….  But I’ll be ok!  In a few, I’m going with Jack and Ken to Applebee’s for a Hit The Road Jack segment…should be lots of fun!!

I’ll keep ya posted on all the behind the scenes action!!

Hey Megan,

Next time make sure Jack or Kimberly talks with me. I can make sure that they get any balloons they need. I was the balloon guy at the Greenville premeire of UP.
