In midst of tragedy…by our intern Kathryn

Everyone is aware of the earthquakes that have torn apart Haiti and so many people are coming together in order to bring some sort of relief to the country. I find it so inspiring, as a 21-year old student, to see people collectively help the greater good. Last week, my school held a prayer service and yesterday, I participated in a spaghetti dinner that collected money to send. The help for Haiti reminds me of how America came together to help those, my family included, after Hurricane Katrina as well as the sense of togetherness that took place after the terrorist attacks. The one thing that I find hard to fathom is that we can never seem to stay together. The love and help that we share with one another in the midst of a tragedy is always short lived. After 9/11, so many “I love America…” songs were recorded and blasted the radio, but within two years, the People had fallen apart and gone their separate ways yet again. I wish we could be like that Beatles’ song, “Come Together” and simply stay that way. Is this possible?
